How to Choose a Lube Applicator

A considered walkthrough of lube applicator types, materials, capacities, and cleaning — written for people who want a cleaner, more precise routine.

A lubricant applicator is a small tool, but the right one noticeably improves a routine. Less mess, less waste, more precision. This guide covers how to choose, use, and clean one — based on the three applicators we make at ANGCURE and what customers ask us most often.

Why use an applicator at all

Applying lubricant directly from a squeeze bottle works for external use. For internal use, or for pre-application as part of a routine, an applicator delivers a measured amount cleanly. It also keeps the lubricant bottle itself cleaner, since the lubricant never touches the bottle opening after the applicator is filled.

The ANGCURE applicators

We make three applicators, all built around the same body-safe design with a smooth, rounded cap, a 10ml scale, and easy-clean materials. They differ only in color:

The functionality is identical across the three. Choose the color you prefer.

What to look for in any applicator

Whether you choose ours or another brand, four things matter:

1. Material safety

The applicator touches your body. Look for body-safe plastics or silicone, smooth seams, and a rounded cap with no sharp edges. Avoid anything with a strong chemical smell out of the package.

2. Capacity

10ml is the most useful capacity for most routines — large enough to be practical, small enough to control. Larger capacities (20ml+) can feel unwieldy; smaller ones (5ml) need frequent refilling.

3. Ease of cleaning

An applicator that disassembles is dramatically easier to clean than one that does not. Our applicators separate into barrel, plunger, and cap — each washable with warm water and mild soap.

4. Smoothness of action

The plunger should move smoothly, without sudden jumps that make precision impossible. A rounded cap means comfortable, controlled application.

How to use a lube applicator

  1. Wash the applicator and your hands before use.
  2. Draw lubricant into the barrel by placing the tip in the lubricant and pulling the plunger back slowly.
  3. Check the 10ml scale to confirm the amount you want.
  4. Apply gently. The rounded cap should require no force.
  5. Disassemble and clean immediately after use (see next section).

How to clean a reusable applicator

This is the single most important maintenance step. A poorly cleaned applicator is a health risk.

  1. Disassemble the applicator into barrel, plunger, and cap.
  2. Rinse each part under warm running water.
  3. Wash with mild, fragrance-free soap. Avoid harsh detergents or alcohol, which can degrade the material over time.
  4. Rinse thoroughly until no residue remains.
  5. Air-dry completely on a clean surface before reassembly. Do not store damp.

When to replace an applicator

With regular cleaning, a quality applicator lasts months to years. Replace immediately if you notice:

  • Visible cracks, clouding, or surface changes
  • A plunger that no longer moves smoothly
  • Any lingering smell after thorough cleaning
  • Discoloration that does not wash out

Pairing an applicator with the right lubricant

Applicators work with both water-based and silicone-based lubricants. Silicone-based lubricants (like our ANGCURE silicone or HOTTOK silicone) rinse out more easily; water-based lubricants may need a second rinse. Either is fine.

Frequently asked questions

Are applicators reusable? Yes — our applicators are designed for repeated use with proper cleaning.

Can I boil the applicator to sterilize it? No. The materials are not rated for boiling. Warm water and mild soap are sufficient.

Can I share an applicator? For hygiene reasons, applicators should be personal. Do not share.

Where to start

If you do not already have an applicator, the simplest entry point is the Blue & Black or Red & Gray — same functionality, your color preference. Pair it with a silicone lubricant for the easiest cleaning experience.
